Illustration Friday - Trick or Treat

Pen and ink, digital color. It's a quick sketch, but I didn't want to miss the topic. I'm stretching it a bit with this one, but in terms of Halloween I don't think you can go wrong with the classics, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in this case.

Lately I've been interested in the old textile mills here in New England. A fair number are being converted into office and artists' space, but some just look deserted. I can't help but wonder what they would have looked like in their heyday. I've been wondering too about the children that would have worked in these factories and have been sketching with this at the back of my mind.

Sketching more animals as of late.
I had some fun doing that, enjoying french toast, and taking in some movies at the New Hampshire Film Festival this weekend. We caught "On Broadway" which is one of the best films I have seen in a loooong time. It's playing here in the Northeast at various film festivals and if it comes to your neighborhood go! The cast was at the showing I went to (including a certain former boy band member turned actor who yes, I did meet). But a really fantastic film and worth seeing.

The ants go marching one by one...

Substituting "boll weevil" for "ants" just doesn't sound as catchy.
*I've been rereading "A Home - Paintings from a Bygone Age", a collection of Carl Larsson's paintings of domestic life. It's one of my favorite books - my parents gave it to me when I was around eight or nine. There's some great images of Larsson's family paintings here.

Illustration Friday - Open

Illustration Friday - Open. I had a connecting flight in Brussels once. The flight came in over the English Channel, it was early morning and the whole thing was really beautiful. I'd imagine seeing that view with a parachute might have been even more delightful.

Peggy Sue

She's one of those characters I'd love to turn into a story at some point.
*They're re-airing "My Family & Other Animals"! I saw a paperback of this in a dollar book bin today and am thinking I ought to go back...
*Ben Hatke's newly updated portfolio is full of delightful illustrations.
Alrighty then, there's a mug of tea and a spy novel calling my name.
