Put on a show

I was going through some of the images on my hard drive and found this one from earlier in the year. It ran in the SCBWI bulletin awhile back.

Red leaves! And the sheet music I had forgotten about - John Thompson piano books anybody? I think I saw that they've redesigned these without the delightful old pen and ink drawings. They might be old school, but I really enjoyed this series. That Spinning Song" was a great one to pound away on, trying to see just how fast you could play it...
*Tara Hogan's illustrations - I saw these the other week at Nahcotta. I love the use of paper and type.
*Marce has some neat drawings of everyday objects

Pauline

Another doodle finished off in photoshop. I was trying out some different brushes with this one. I'm thinking those oranges and reds are looking mighty fall-like. Between the apple cider* and the Canada geese that were flying over the road tonight it's definitely autumn.
*Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves. Microwave. Instant apple goodness, mmmm!

The Salutatorian

She started off as a doodle today, finished off digitally.
*"Dinotopia" illustrator James Gurney has a great blog with lots of info. on his process and art. The landscape maquettes are really something.
*Pez wall art - I knew there was a reason I was hanging onto that C-3PO dispenser...

Postage Due

Between the leaves beginning to change and the school buses lumbering by in the morning, I guess I can't deny autumn is on its way. Strange how even when you're out of the school routine, it still seems like things begin anew when the calendar flips to September.

I signed up for the Back to School swap and was lucky to receive a delightful package from the mucho-talented Kate of Nydam Press. The bookmark above is her design and I love her prints, more over here.

Howdy!

More sketchbook painting.
And I have to say, sitting in a lawn chair with a Dunkin' Donuts coolata might not be the most productive activity, but it made a hot, sticky Saturday that much sweeter.

La Vie Quotidienne

I don't do nearly as much drawing from life as I should. I'm trying to get back into it though and here's my niece. Little children are interesting subjects to draw; they move INCREDIBLY fast and the proportions of the head are so very different than an adult's. The pencil I used is a Derwent watercolor (a result of the aforementioned business closing sale).

More scone baking - this recipe I give five stars and paradoxically it's from a cooking light cookbook. Again the specimen was covered in butter and jam (Stonewall Kitchen, mmmm...) Combined with a hot cup of coffee, this made for some perfect Labor Day fare.
And now it's off to find green tea in a last ditch attempt to ward off the flu. Here's to hoping I don't sound like a 13 year old boy by morning...
